“The only thing that moves you forward is your work” – Ava Duvernay

I’m constantly inspired by the incredible filmmaker Ava Duvernay. She’s humble, talented, focused and regularly makes huge power moves in the film and television industry that make every black girl smile! I watched an awesome talk from her at the Directors Guild of America (you can watch the full thing below) and while listening to her she confirmed for me that the only thing that matters is your work! Your work is the only thing that will move you forward! This week my Memo is inspired by her awesomeness, enjoy the video and please watch her entire key note speech below.

    Omg this is so me right now. I needed to hear this cause I have a degree in writing and feel as if I’m not doing anything with it. I have all this talent and I am not utilizing it. Girl, I will use this quote as a reminder of what I need to do

    I seriously needed to hear this today. The past few weeks I have been struggling with how much effort I put into my work when other people can use their family connections and/or money to get it ‘for free.’ This makes me feel like my hard work in school and other aspects of my life will pay off. I love people with integrity and who put in honest, hard work–thank you for this video and happy Monday ! xoxo
